This is a process of exhibition set-up. For me, It is extremely hard to set all kinds of electronic cables of iPad. Anyway, It is a good opportunity to practice. Special thanks to Jonathan’s help.

At this stage, I used nails to fix these old frames on the wall instead of strong tape. At the same time, more exact layout to be confirmed. Jonathan taught me how to choose a more clever position to fix nail, which makes old frame have a suitable angle.

I am trying to put these old frames on the floor of an exhibition room and trying to give a suitable layout of my integrated composition. At this stage, a very useful super tape is recommended by Jonathan. I think probably I can use strong tape to fix my old frames of still image.

Layout test of final show

Finally, I decide to use 20 old frames to construct a story about emotional sensations, which probably looks narrative and ambiguous. I put these old frames on the lawn for a layout test.

For still image print part, I choose a paper called FUJI FLEX has very strong reflection, which is similar to iPad screen.

Emotional sensation

I am just trying to use some ambiguous visual language to present emotional sensation.On the one hand, I am quite interested in some fragments. It looks has more space for viewer’s imagination. On the other hand, emotional sensation is quite difficult to describe it. It might mean that ambiguity is a best way to put forward.

Jake- I like how you discuss the dialogue between multiple videos. That’s something I’m interested in personally.How when two things that are perhaps completely unrelated are put next to each other.
The viewer automatically begins to make connections.We just seemed to be wired to constantly search for some form of narrative.Even if it’s not actually present. We build it for ourselves.

For me, I think ambiguity is quite free,which could be interpreted by many different possibilities. When some different videos together,more imaginative space between these videos,which have more interpretation by the audience in some way. That is the reason why i prefer to use multiple videos.

Lionel- Ambiguity is a vital and big subject, Ruby and I think you are tackling it in quite a ‘contemporary’ way. Looking at the examples in the video made me wonder if you had done similar experiments with 3D objects also?

To be honest, I did more research about contemporary approach. It might mean that my research is not deep enough.I also want to do something related to 3D objects or a combination of 2D objects and 3D objects.It is more exciting way to do some experiments related to ambiguity in art.  Otherwise, Interaction installation also is a potential approach to research ambiguity.

Andy- did you use separate sound on your film? Would be interested to see how sound changes the still images or if sound changes them.

Yes. Sound is a very important element in the film, which could change the context of the film. I am also quite interested in the effect of different sounds. I will do some sound experiments in the future.

ED- There’s a slightly “home movie” aspect to the sound in the video pieces. I would throw that away and make the soundtrack from scratch.

Professionally, I need to think about it seriously.

Jake- is home movie sound always a bad thing?

I think sometimes it is good, so another question:  is home movie is a bad thing?

Jake- i feel like video art has a history of utilizing really lo-fi technology, but yes it definitely should be a conscious decision.

Lo-fi (from the term “low fidelity“) is lower quality of sound recordings than the usual standard for modern music. The qualities of lo-fi are usually achieved by either degrading the quality of the recorded audio, or using certain equipment.

Ally-i’m a bit confused about ambiguity though. does ambiguity have to have a common theme or source – if that makes sense?

Jonathan-Ally, I love this line — ‘i’m a bit confused about ambiguity’ — perfect!!

Ambiguity is a little bit confused,which is a very clever definition even I always confused with this.

ED-“Home movie sound” implies one, fairly non–diagetic idea, whereas “professional soundtrack” implies diagesis – i.e narrative

something about old frames

I am just trying to create something relates to these old frames. Even it is imaginary and fictive. Some of these old frames are from charity shop and vintage market, which are unique and special. But I don’t know too much about these old frames. I only know when I see these old frames, some VISUAL LANGUAGE/IMAGE are started to appear. It could be narrative and ambiguous. I think it is a collage of the old frame itself and my own imagination.

The image sticks most in my mind is the powerful vitality. Image followed by some footage, then immediately by delicate emotion. I just imagine this kind of picture is existed for a long time.

In my point of view, some old frames are inspired. It might mean that one detail to be a fictional plot of this old frame. I can’t exactly describe what I want to express. But you can watch story like this.

I think it would be good to show two pieces of one image to everyone.

it is an unusual film, or documentary, and it shows some animals or a portrait with slow motion.

i wanted to show you some stories in this beach, but i did see anything only seawater and stones.

I found some people under a huge mirror, which looks like an oil painting. I want to say something to these crowded people, but it cannot be heard by anybody.

Tutorial for final show

I got three times tutorial with Jonathan from the beginning of the April until now.

First tutorial:

I just did very few pieces of my video collage works. I am not satisfied with these collage, which are too artificial. I need to make more.

Second tutorial:

I want to have some inspirations for my creative collage. I decided to inspire by some poems from Iceland. I think probably I can find some interesting relations with my collage work. In this tutorial, Jonathan was asked a lot of questions for details. Some questions are linked to installation of my work. I realized that all of the details in artwork are quite important. Even a very simple detail will effects different results and meanings.

Third tutorial:

After my second tutorial with Jonathan, I did some experiments with different versions of poems on paper. I did test on typewriter.  I found it is too difficult to be done. Actually I can’t easily control each sentence and I also need to seriously focus on the layout when I write something.

I think a poem could be my creative inspiration. I want to find a topic for my further collage work, which could be more narrative and more meaningful. At the same time, I decided to use some old frames with my collage work.

Jonathan told me that I need to pay attention to old frames themselves. Probably I can create a story for each old frame. It means that these old frames could be instead of the poem as my creative inspiration. On the other hand, I think this suggestion is another kind of collage, which is quite mysterious and imaginative.
